“I think it would be wonderful if our nation could begin a major project at the site of the former Majapahit kingdom, similar to the excavations at Pompeii, involving our own archaeologists from various universities working collaboratively.” – Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, 2008

Approximately twelve years since the idea in the above quote was conceived, a collaborative project called the Integrated Indonesian Archaeological Research (PATI) has been carried out four times in various formats. In 2020, PATI IV was held again and participated in by six universities (University of Jambi, University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, Udayana University, Hasanuddin University, and Halu Oleo University) in collaboration with the Directorate of Cultural Protection of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture through the East Java Cultural Heritage Preservation Center (BPCB), in the excavation and preservation of the Kumitir Site, Mojokerto, East Java.

Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, PATI IV had to make various adjustments to the activity design using a hybrid method (online and offline in the field). This posed its own challenges in its implementation, as the learning activities of PATI IV participants became limited. However, despite these limitations, it did not diminish the space for discussion and exchange of ideas regarding issues, results, and discussions about Majapahit today.

This book is the second edition of a collection of notes from PATI IV participants, compiled in a Majapahit anthology in today’s discussion.
