In accordance with one of the missions of the Yayasan Arsari Djojohadi-kusomo (YAD) to develop activities on cultural preservation and the involvement of the YAD’s board,  namely Hashim Djojohadikusomo and Catrini Kubontubuh, as board members of Badan Pelestarian Pusaka Indonesia (BPPI) or  the Indonesian Heritage Trust, the following is a brief report  on their participation at the 16th Preservation Conference of the World or International Conference of National Trusts (ICNT). The said conference was held from 7th to 11th September 2015 in Cambridge, England. This international conference was organized by the International National Trusts  Organisation (INTO). It  is an association of conservation organizations in various countries around the world. INTO was established in New Delhi, India in 2007 and has its headquarters situated in London. It currently has 65 member countries.

ICNT is held every two years and is attended by participants from various countries of the INTO members. The ICNT 2015 was officially opened by H.E. Prince of Wales and was attended by 150 participants representing 35 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Australia. The Indonesian delegation consisted of 11 people from BPPI and YAD Teams including Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Catrini Kubontubuh, Sitie Indrawati, Nirmala Ratimanjari, Putri Sulistyowati, Lanang Muliarta and Sylvie Vanneste as well as the team of the Government of Gianyar regency  and three Balinese dancers from the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) Bali.

There are three main issues discussed and reviewed in  this world conference: 1) Cultural identity: our inheritance from the past becomes ever more  important as a signpost to the future. The particular areas for exploration include meeting the needs and expectations of today’s visitors; using the past to engage with contemporary issues; identifying ‘spirit of place’ and interpretation.   2) Land and landscaping: delegates will explore the responsibilities and opportunities that arise from the ownership and stewardship of land and landscape; and 3) Growing the movement: workshops will explore growing and retaining a membership base, communicating brand and cause, role as campaigners, working with volunteers and developing a business model.

Meanwhile, the executive committee also talked about three important matters connected to globalization issues such as climate change, the synergy between members and regeneration issues for the sustainability of the system as well as how to attract and gain wider members.

On the same occasion, INTO also performed management turnover and representatives of various nations wherein Catrini Kubontubuh was re-elected to represent Indonesia as a member of the Executive Committee for INTO during the period of 2015-2021.

Indonesia to host the 17th ICNT

INTO has decided to grant credence to Indonesia to host the 17th ICNT to be held on 11-15 September 2017 in Gianyar, Bali. The official handover of ICNT host from England to Indonesia, which has been done during the conference, was enlivened with Gita Bramara dance performances by the dancers from the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI), Bali.

The leader of the Indonesian delegation, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, said that he is very proud that Indonesia is allowed to host the conference. BPPI, as an organizer of the 17th ICNT, is a credible organization. BPPI will cooperate with the Government of Gianyar, Bali. All members of the INTO are excited to take part in the 17th ICNT. The conference  will tackle the topic: “Strengthen Our Culture to Promote Environmental Sustainability.”Let us support BPPI as well as the Gianyar regency for the implementation of the ICNT 2017,  Bali.  (Text ZHN/Editor & photo  CPK)
