Recently, Mamat was transferred from the forest school in Tembak to the rescue center in Sintang. Mamat had been in Tembak since 2014 and during the past years, Mamat has grown into a large, adult male. He even developed cheek pads, which are a characteris- tic of dominance in male orangutans. Even very young brave orangutans can show small cheek pads giving away a lot about their character.
Mamat, 18 years of age, was more than twice the age of the other orangutans in Tembak. Because of his dominant behaviour and strength, the other orangutans were constantly in a state of alert and the staff feared that this might affect the progress of their rehabilitation. Furthermore, one of the orangutans, Benazir, has recently given birth and needed protection. To reduce the stress among the other orangutans, the staff decided to bring Mamat back to Sintang.
Now, Mamat occupies one of the socialization enclosures in the rescue center. Other residents at the center are Oli (male, 13), Penai (female, 17) and Bablu (fe- male, 21) with her baby Artemis (female, 2).
