Hashim Djojohadikusumo, the head of the supervisory board of Jakarta’s Ragunan Zoo, wants the Ragunan Zoo to have a Safari Night attraction to make the zoo more competitive with other zoos in the world.
“Singapore is well known with its Safari Night. We can also do that [the Safari Night],” Hashim said yesterday, adding that Indonesia has more diverse animal and plant species than Singapore.
Ragunan Zoo director Marsawitri Gumay said she was planning on commencing the safari night within two or three years. The Ragunan Zoo currently has a total of 1,951 animals from 220 species, in addition to 19,229 plant species.
With a size of 140 hectares, Marsawitri said, Ragunan Zoo is the world’s second largest zoo with the most diverse animal and plant population. It is also the third oldest zoo in the world and recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. (Tempo.com 21 sept 2014/Ninis Chairunnisa)
