New Year, bringing forth new hopes for conservation of our beloved Earth and the well-being of all its inhabitants. This January issue of YAD News comes brimming with stories about activities at the end of 2021, and the beginning of 2022.
YAD’s role in Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) conservation efforts has further expanded on global scale with our participation as a member of Global Tiger Forum. One of such activities at the beginning of the year was the Asia Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation (January 19-20, 2022). The virtual conference was attended by conservation practitioners from India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, all the way to Kazakhstan and Russia. YAD’s participation told the stories of PR-HSD ARSARI and its 3R (rescue, rehabilitation, release) policy to help Sumatran tigers plagued with increasing conflict with humans.
Another article of equal interest is about the evacuation process of Puti Maua Agam, a female tiger rescued by PR-HSD ARSARI together with the West Sumatra BKSDA in early January. News from PR-HSD is not all about tigers. In this issue, the team also wrote about urban monkeys in PR-HSD site, more specifically Prof. Sumitro Djojohadikusumo Conservation Area in Dharmasraya, West Sumatra.
There are also accounts on educational side, such as a reflection on a monitoring visit to SDN 1 Adiwiyata in Selemadeg, Bali. This school receives operational assistance from YAD to improve the quality of its education, and is especially unique in its active efforts to recycle plastic waste though GAPSAP (Gerakan Anak-anak Peduli Sampah Plastik – Children Against Plastic Waste Movement). Another interesting article in this field is the anticipated second part of the historical memoir of Djojohadikusumo’s family, that we have learned from a book written by RM Margono Djojohadikusumo.
